John Dunn

General Surgeon
MB ChB 1982 Auckland; FRACS 1988

John Dunn is an Auckland-trained General Surgeon and experienced endoscopist who has played a pioneering role in minimally invasive healthcare in New Zealand for more than four decades. He is the Founder of Endoscopy Auckland and has dedicated much of his career to advancing laparoscopic surgery and endoscopy, helping improve patient outcomes through less invasive approaches to treatment and diagnosis.

Following his surgical training in Auckland, John completed two years of subspecialty training at Groote Schuur Hospital in Cape Town, South Africa, gaining advanced experience in surgery and endoscopy. On returning to New Zealand, he became an early advocate for laparoscopic surgery and was among the surgeons who helped establish minimally invasive techniques as part of routine surgical care.

Today, while no longer performing operative surgery, John remains actively involved in endoscopy, performing gastroscopy and colonoscopy procedures with particular interests in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease, bowel cancer screening and colorectal cancer prevention. He is passionate about the role endoscopy plays in early diagnosis, disease prevention and supporting better long-term health outcomes.

In addition to his clinical work, John has served as an Associate Professor at the University of Auckland, a long-serving visiting surgeon to Rarotonga Hospital, and an advisor to the Cook Islands Government. Throughout his career, he has remained committed to patient-centred care, with a strong focus on safety, comfort and recovery, delivered in a modern facility designed around the needs of patients and clinicians alike.
