Driving and support after sedation

Most procedures involve sedation to help you feel relaxed throughout your visit.

Because of this, you will need someone to drive you home and remain available to support you for the rest of the day.

You must not drive, travel home alone, operate machinery or make important decisions until the following day.

Location and parking

Endoscopy Auckland is located at:

Parking is available on site.

Procedure timing

You should allow approximately two hours at the facility  in total, including admission and recovery time.

After your procedure

Following your procedure, you will be taken back to your private room to rest while the sedation wears off.

When you are awake, your specialist will discuss the initial findings with you. Because of the sedation, you may not clearly remember this discussion. You will also receive a written summary for your reference.

A detailed report will be sent to your GP or referring doctor.

Going home

Before leaving the clinic:

  • You will be offered a light snack and drink – including fresh sandwiches that many patients say are the highlight of their visit

  • Staff will ensure you are feeling well enough to leave

  • Your support person can collect you

Most people return to normal activities the following day.

Results and follow-up

If biopsies are taken, laboratory results are usually available within two weeks.

These results will be reviewed by your specialist and shared with your GP or referring doctor.
