Q&A with Kamal

What do you enjoy most about your work?

I enjoy using my knowledge and endoscopic skills to help patients better understand their health concerns and guide them towards appropriate treatment and solutions.

What is most important to you when caring for patients?

Making meaningful decisions that help patients regain their health and return to enjoying their personal, social and professional lives.

How do you help patients feel comfortable during a procedure?

I believe a calming conversation, a clear understanding of each patient’s health concerns and a thorough knowledge of their medical history all help put patients at ease. Explaining the procedure and having an appropriate care plan in place also provides reassurance.

What areas of care are you particularly focused on?

My focus is on identifying and managing gastrointestinal conditions, including reflux disease, peptic ulcer disease, coeliac disease, irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), eosinophilic gastrointestinal diseases, microscopic colitis, gastrointestinal cancers and polyps, as well as liver, bile duct and pancreatic diseases.

What do you want patients to know about endoscopy procedures?

Endoscopy procedures are minimally invasive investigations that allow us to directly examine the gastrointestinal tract and identify potential health concerns. They are generally performed under sedation to help keep patients comfortable throughout the procedure.

What advice would you give someone preparing for their procedure?

Follow the preparation instructions carefully to help ensure your endoscopy procedure is safe and effective.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending time with my children and family, as well as walking, hiking and occasionally cycling. I also love trying different foods and cuisines.

A favourite place in Auckland?

Walking to the summit of Mount Eden.
