Q&A with Philip
What do you enjoy most about your work?
I enjoy the close collaboration with GPs, other specialists, and patients that private practice allows. Being easily available helps make things less demanding for GPs, and patients benefit from being assessed and treated promptly. Rectal bleeding is always concerning, particularly given the high rates of bowel cancer we see in New Zealand, so timely investigation, diagnosis, and treatment are important for everyone.
What do you want patients to know about endoscopy procedures?
Colonoscopy remains the gold standard for the accurate and safe diagnosis of altered bowel habit and rectal bleeding. The bowel preparation is usually the most unpleasant part. The procedure itself is rarely uncomfortable, particularly with Propofol anaesthesia now available. We also have excellent modern facilities in Epsom and a very experienced nursing and administrative team, which makes the experience much smoother for patients.
What do you enjoy doing outside of work?
Outside of work, when I’m not helping my wife in the garden, I enjoy regular cycling. I recently completed the South Island half of the Tour Aotearoa cycle route, which was a wonderful way to experience our beautiful country while staying fit at the same time.
