Philip Wong

Gastroenterologist, Hepatologist and Interventional Endoscopist

Philip Wong was born and raised in Auckland and completed his medical degree at the University of Auckland in 1984. He undertook physician training at Middlemore and Auckland Hospitals and was awarded Fellowship of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1991.

Following his specialist training, Philip moved to the Institute of Liver Studies at King’s College Hospital in London, where he further developed expertise in liver disease and transplantation medicine between 1991 and 1994. Since returning to Auckland in 1994, he has worked in both private gastroenterology practice and as a Gastroenterologist at Auckland City Hospital, where he held a permanent specialist appointment until 2020.

Philip has extensive experience in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and has particular interests in liver disease, hepatitis B and C, bowel cancer screening, ERCP, and capsule endoscopy.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

The combination of face-to-face patient interaction and procedural work through endoscopy.

What is most important to you when caring for patients?

Making sure patients receive the best possible care and expert advice.

What do you want patients to know about endoscopy procedures?

I think it’s important that patients understand what to expect from their procedure, including both the common and rare complications, so they feel informed and reassured.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

Road cycling.
