Stephen Persson

Stephen Persson is a specialist Gastroenterologist with more than 25 years of experience in the diagnosis and management of digestive, liver, pancreatic, and biliary disorders. Having lived in Auckland for most of his life, he completed medical school locally before undertaking advanced gastroenterology training at Auckland City Hospital, Middlemore Hospital, and Middlesex Hospital/University College Hospitals in London.

Stephen completed a postgraduate fellowship in interventional endoscopy and ERCP at one of London’s premier endoscopy units before returning to New Zealand in 1998 to take up a consultant gastroenterology position at Middlemore Hospital. He has extensive experience in both diagnostic and therapeutic endoscopy and continues to work across public and private practice.

He consults on the full spectrum of gastroenterological conditions, with particular interests in hepatobiliary and pancreatic disorders, functional bowel disorders, motility disorders, coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease, and gastrointestinal malignancies.

What do you enjoy most about your work?

Helping others and the satisfaction of a grateful patient.

What is most important to you when caring for patients?

Conveying care and concern, compassion and providing optimal care.

How do you help patients feel comfortable during a procedure?

Engaging with them and putting them at ease with some light humour and general chat.

What advice would you give someone preparing for their procedure?

Relax and follow bowel prep instructions closely.

What do you enjoy doing outside of work?

I enjoy spending quality time with close friends and I love to follow international top grade tennis tournaments. I've been to several grand slam tournaments including Wimbledon twice.

Something patients might be surprised to learn about you?

I was the first ever gastroenterology trainee and registrar at Middlemore Hospital where I am based. I started off my medical journey as a GP for a short period of time. I didn’t decide to go into medicine until the last 6 months of high school.
