Wal Baraza trained in general surgery in Yorkshire, United Kingdom, before completing subspecialist training in laparoscopic colorectal and pelvic floor surgery in Auckland. He later returned to the UK to take up a consultant position and honorary clinical lectureship with Manchester University NHS Foundation Trust.
During seven years working within the NHS, Wal developed particular expertise in the management of early rectal cancer, pelvic floor disorders, abdominal wall herniae, and colorectal conditions. Alongside his clinical practice, he has maintained strong interests in medical education, surgical training, and medicolegal practice, and also served as an advisor to the General Medical Council supporting the regulation of medical associate professionals.
Wal moved to Auckland in 2023 and now works as a General and Colorectal Surgeon and Senior Lecturer at the University of Auckland. He is committed to providing evidence-based, patient-focused care across a broad range of colorectal and gastrointestinal conditions.
